Projection mapped wall

October 4, 2011

To test out a new projection mapping tool I did a quick mapping of the wall created by the architecture firm IwamotoScott who shares a space in the Obscura office.

You can read more about the wall here. The mapping was done with the KanTan mapping tool from Derivative Inc. and took about three hours to complete from start to finish with a single projector. Instead of using a 3D model the process involved creating a collection of 2D masks by hand from the projector’s viewpoint. This reduces the preparation time since no virtual model is needed but it’s less flexible as you have to redo the entire mapping if you want to map the object from another viewpoint.

The content consists of a single rotating gradient on each mapped surface. Each surface’s gradient is offset by an animated bitmap image creating a sense of movement.
